Aug. 1, 1989: Duluth hosts its first Bayfront Blues Festival. More than 30 acts perform this year, Aug. 10-12, 2012.
Sept. 24, 1926: A shaft at the Pabst Mine in Ironwood, Michigan, collapses and buries 46 men, killing three of them instantly. After 129 hours underground, the others are rescued safely. – Ironwood Chamber of Commerce
Sept. 30, 1891: The beacon at Devil’s Island Lighthouse in Wisconsin is lit for the first time.

Aicheng Chen, a chemistry researcher and research chair in materials and environmental chemistry at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, was awarded the Canadian Society for Chemistry’s Keith Laidler Award, one of the country’s most prestigious chemistry honors.
St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth was among America’s 100 Best Hospitals chosen by HealthGrades, a Denver-based ranking organization. The hospital ranked overall in the top 100 and also for critical care, pulmonary care and stroke care.
Storyteller, musician and musicologist Oren Tikkanen of Calumet, Michigan, received the 2012 Upper Peninsula Folklife Award from the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center, given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the preservation, promotion and performance of the Upper Peninsula’s traditional arts.
