June 15, 1939: Crown Prince Olav of Norway dedicates Duluth’s Enger Tower, named for Bert Enger a local businessman originally from Norway.
June 18, 1855: The steamship Illinois becomes the first ship to pass through the Soo Locks.
July 5, 1854: Asaph Whittlesey and George Kibourn arrive at the Bayfield Peninsula. Whittlesey will found the town of Ashland, Wisconsin.
July 29, 1911: The Canadian Northern Railroad is completed between Montréal, Quebec, and Port Arthur (now part of Thunder Bay).
History Notes
Bayfield was given the Governor’s Tourism Stewardship Award during the 2011 Wisconsin Conference on Tourism. The award presentation praised the community’s practices “includes tourism but also goes beyond it. Municipal offices, the school district, local businesses and area residents are firmly committed to a core value of sustainable living.”
Granite Gear, based in Two Harbors, Minnesota, earned an Editors’ Choice Award from Backpacker magazine for its Blaze AC 60 pack. The prestigious award is given annually recognizing outstanding innovation in design, materials and/or performance.
The general manager of the Marquette Country Inn & Suites by Carlson, Gail Anthony, was chosen by Michigan Lodging and Tourism Association as its 2011 Hotelier of the Year. The award recognizes the top owner/operator among more than 500 hotels statewide. Award nominees are judged on hotel performance, guest satisfaction, employee relations and community involvement.
