Winter just got a lot more colorful.
Two scientists from NASA and NOAA have developed a new space-based technique for monitoring the ice cover of the Great Lakes that is so accurate it can identify a narrow channel of open water cut through the ice by an icebreaker -- even at night.

Just Keep Paddling, Just Keep Paddling
Grand Marais, Minnesota, couple Amy and Dave Freeman were named two of National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year. The adventure educators spent three years paddling from Seattle to Key West, teaching kids along the way and across the web about the wilderness. They’re now up for the People’s Choice Award, too.
