Thunder Bay’s Coast Guard radio station could close next year, reports the Sault Star.
The Thunder Bay Coast Guard marine communications and traffic centre, which keeps a listening watch over the Canadian waters of Lake Superior, is one of 10 centres across the country slated to be closed in what Fisheries and Oceans Canada says is a move to adopt new technology.
Mariners and search-and-rescue volunteers worry about the safety implications of the closure.
Oil Plans Move Ahead

[O]fficials at Calumet LLC, owners of the Superior oil refinery, are considering building a $25 million crude oil transfer dock in Superior, where oil would be loaded onto tankers and barges and moved across the Great Lakes to refineries in Ontario, Michigan, Ohio and even the East Coast.
