We’re thawing out here at Lake Superior Magazine’s offices in Duluth after a week of bitter cold by the Big Lake. After watching the Lake steam in temperatures that dropped below -20º F, we could see the 30s – practically tropical – by early next week.

The Upper Twin Falls Bridge has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The bridge, built in 1910, “spans the Menominee River, and connects Breitung Township to Florence, Wisconsin,” writes Sam Eggleston for UP’s Second Wave. Read more about the designation and what it means.
Golden Opportunity
Split Rock Lighthouse will host a photography class this Saturday, 1-6:30 p.m., to coincide with the full moon, which aligns magnificently with the lighthouse just once a year. John Gregor and Randy Hagar of ColdSnap Photography will help participants nail the shot.
Michigan DNR Surveying Wildlife
Michigan DNR researchers have struggled to complete the state’s bi-annual moose survey this month, first because of a lack of snow cover and now because of frigid temperatures and high wind speeds.

+ The History Channel TV show "Ax Men" will feature Wisconsin Woodchuck LLC this season. Since 2006, the Superior-based company has been dismantling the Globe Elevator and salvaging its six million feet of old-growth Eastern White Pine. Wisconsin Woodchuck will hold a press conference and viewing party on Sunday, Jan. 27.
