A Red-Letter Day for Black Bay
Hoping to restore fish populations in Lake Superior’s Black Bay, provincial officials have proposed removing the Black Sturgeon River Dam and replacing it with a new dam 50 kilometres upriver. The relocation “is intended to help fish species return to their spawning grounds,” reports TBNewsWatch.com.

The Pagami Creek Fire in 2011 devastated more than 90,000 acres of Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, including the beloved Pow Wow Trail. But the Boundary Waters Advisory Commission and the Forest Service are working “to create a comprehensive restoration plan for the years ahead,” reports WDIO.

GLSLCI Conference Coming to Marquette
The annual conference of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative is coming to Marquette this summer. GLSLCI is a non-profit initiative that advances “the protection and restoration efforts related to the St. Lawrence River and the five Great Lakes,” reports the Mining Journal. The three-day conference could draw up to 200 people from 60 cities. It’s previously been held in, among other places, Chicago, Milwaukee and Toronto. The event kicks off on June 19.

ALL SYSTEMS GO: After four years of construction, Duluth International Airport’s new terminal was unveiled today with a grand opening celebration. The $78 million terminal officially opens on Monday, Jan. 14. The Duluth News Tribune has more.
