The Nordic Center presents "The Uprooting," a play about immigration, by Vigleik Rosseland, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. at The Underground theater at the Depot. Like a letter from the past, this play brings to life a meeting of young Norwegian farmers and craftsmen being enticed to emigrate to America in 1825 on a vessel named the Restoration. The enticer is Kleng Peerson, "father of Norwegian Immigration." The immigrants, later known as the “Sloopers,” are ancestors to many Norwegians who later settled in Minnesota. Written nearly 100 years ago but just recently discovered in Norway among the playwright's stored memorabilia, the script has been translated into English and developed into a performance piece that includes beautiful Norwegian immigrant music. Thanks to the St Louis County Historical Society, a reception immediately following the play will include free access to the Immigrant Waiting Room Exhibit. Live music, a cash bar and a variety of Nordic appetizers will also be included in the price of the ticket. Admission is $10. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.duluthplayhouse.org, or by calling the Playhouse box office at 218-733-7555.
