North End Ski Trails in Cable, Wisconsin, will play host to the North End Classic ski race Sunday, February 10. A series of small snowfalls over the past two weeks has brought enough snow to the trails to ensure a quality event for the 13th annual running of this popular local ski race. More than 200 racers are expected for the 25K and 12.5K classic-technique races starting at 10 a.m. The races will start on the west end of the powerline on the Birkie Trail just off Randysek Road, two miles south of Cable and finish at the North End Trail Head. The first 200 registered racers in the 12.5km or 25km races will receive a Mt. Borah neck wrap. Immediately following the start of the two longer distance races, the North End Cookie Classic will launch with young skiers ages 3 to 12 kicking their way down the trail. All budding ski racers will receive a bag of cookies on a ribbon as their award. Cookie Classic participation is free. Presented by the nonprofit North End Ski Club, the North End Classic is a fundraising event that supports the maintenance of the North End Trail Head and ski trails. The club has developed and maintains and grooms 24K of ski trails and 10K of snowshoe trails in cooperation with Bayfield County Forestry. Registration for Sunday’s race will be Saturday from 4-7:30 p.m. at Ideal Market/Rivers Eatery in downtown Cable. Race-day registration will be at the same location from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Racers may also register online until Friday at noon at www.signmeup.com/82849. Spectators can watch the start or finish by driving south from Cable and parking near the North End Trailhead and walking or skiing to the start area. Following the race, skiers will gather for awards, random drawings and hot soup at the Ideal Market/Rivers Eatery. For further information, call 715-798-3599 or email rbergin@cheqnet.net.
