For the special exhibition Display, Michigan artists Cynthia Cote and Kai Orion of Hancock and Team Raymond-Stevens of Ann Arbor embraced the challenge of creating new art installations in the historic setting of the general store.
Cynthia Cote’s project, Kept, is a mesmerizing assemblage of toys, tools and collected items that she describes as “a self-portrait of sorts” that tells the viewer about what strikes her fancy. “Whether it is a stack of old books, a platter of nails, hand sewn clothes by someone’s tiny hands…. This is my stuff. It’s like comfort food. I don’t really need it, but I want it.” In addition to making art and collecting unusual things, Cote serves as the Director of the Copper Country Community Art Center in Hancock.
Kai Orion is a film director, writer, producer and artist currently working on the feature film A Match Made in Hancock. After living in New York City, Los Angeles and China, Kai recently returned to the Copper Country. Upon arrival, he spent six months collecting lottery pull tabs from a single bar with the idea of one day making them into an American flag. This vision has been realized in his provocative installation which incorporates literally thousands of dollars of lost bets, in addition to unique drawings and objects from Orion’s personal collection.
Team Raymond - Stevens is comprised of Leslie Raymond, Jason Jay Stevens and their 7-year-old daughter, Lalena. Their delightful interactive project,The Six Miseries, was created in response to a disastrous, aborted back-packing trip to the Porcupine Mountains. Leslie is Executive Director of the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the oldest independent / avant grade film festival in the United States. Jason is the owner of Flutter & Wow, which researches, designs and implements exhibition projects for museums, galleries, commercial and private clients. Together Jason and Leslie collaborate under the name of Potter/Belmer Labs and have shown in museums and galleries across the United States and Canada.
