William F. Roleff Forest History Photography, on loan from the St. Louis County Historical Society, will be on exhibit at the Cross River Heritage Center August 7 through August 11. Roleff's photos depict the lumber industry operations and daily life for loggers in northeastern Minnesota in a way that draws in both children and adults. Included are scenes of logs being driven downstream, loggers at work in ice and fresh snow, blacksmiths working on metal and shoeing a horse, Spartan log bunkhouse interiors, and horse-drawn loads of logs. The vintage black and white photographs, printed from original glass negatives, date from 1912 to 1916. SAHS archives have yielded photos and artifacts specific to the Schroeder area. A Peavey hook, found by some tourists, was probably used in the last log drive down the Cross River around 1911. Located in Schroeder, Minnesota, The building, with its Tudor-style architecture, was originally built in 1929. Its unusual architecture makes it the only Tudor building in Cook County since its construction. Through the years it has been home to the Stickney Inn, as well as a boarding house, restaurant, general store, post office, gas station and meat market. Admission is free.
