Clear, rugged and inviting. Our Grand Prize winner is the epitome of what Lake Superior conveys to its residents and visitors. Can a photo give a sense of our Lake place – the abundance of water, daily interactions with nature and our embrace of adventure and fun? The images here prove that indeed a photo can.

For the 21st year, we’ve enjoyed a wealth of entries for our Lake Superior Photo Contest. This year, nearly 260 photographers from 18 states or provinces sent more than 1,225 images for our Nature, Lake/Landscape, People/Humor and Artsy/Altered and new Maritime categories. We also had a rare “Cover” winner this year – a photo well matched to the special needs of a cover (expressing in an instant a sense of place plus plenty of useable space for words).
The Grand Prize earns $200, a 2016 Lake Superior wall calendar and one year of Lake Superior Magazine. Cover earns $150, a wall calendar and subscription. First Place nets a subscription and wall calendar. Second Place gets a subscription and mini calendar. This year’s Maritime winners, chosen with the Duluth Superior Port Authority, also will receive a one-year subscription to the authority’s North Star Port. We feature the winners and Honorable Mentions in the magazine and online, and at the bottom of this page you’ll find a selection of Finalists (found only online).
