Behind the Pages

From Our Office
This is the last of our 30th anniversary year issues and is
the last cover on which you will see the special logo at right. Over
this year, you’ve gotten to learn about us and to see photos of our
staff. Before we close out this special year, we thought you might also
like to know a bit about who else - besides you - is reading this
magazine.
We have subscribers in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., the
U.S. territories of Guam and the Virgin Islands, 7 Canadian provinces
and 15 foreign countries. Slightly more than 70 percent of our
subscribers are from our Lake Superior neighborhood in Minnesota,
Michigan, Wisconsin and Ontario. Illinois follows next for numbers of
subscribers (and for those who regularly visit the Lake, we suspect).
The average age of our readers covers the Baby Boomer generation, but
we’ve received our recent surveys back from readers as young as 25 and
as wise as 94.
While it’s hard to judge percentages of men and women as
readers (many couples subscribe), we do know that at least 54 percent
of our photo contest entries last year were from women. Our circulation
peaks around 20,000 during the year.

Worthy Causes
Those who love Isle Royale, Lake Superior and/or moose should
sign up for the raffle of “Moose Near Minong Mine,” this oil painting
by Judith Corning to raise funds for the Isle Royale Natural History
Association. Corning was an artist-in-residence twice in the national
park. Her 46.5-by-22-inch painting is valued at $2,000 and has a simple
handmade, light wood frame. Only 500 tickets will be sold at $10 each
or three for $25. Order at 800-678-6925 or find details at www.irkpa.org. The
drawing will be December 15, 2009, at the park visitor center in
Houghton, Michigan.
