Waterfalls of Michigan: Book 1 • East
by Phil Stagg
MI Falls Publishing • ISBN: 978-0997134605 • $19.95 Softcover
Photographer/author Phil Stagg just released the first of his four-book series on Michigan waterfalls, all centered in the Upper Peninsula with the 580 or so waterfalls that he’s documented (though this first book includes two Lower Peninsula counties). The to-the-point guide places you directly at each waterfall with succinct, valuable information. I was first mildly confused by the “ghosted” icons, showing what isn’t applicable, thinking that all the falls were “private.” Read the upfront guide carefully! That said, this thorough reference with maps, great photos and hiking tips is the best answer to the frequent visitor question: Where are the waterfalls?
Ship Captain’s Daughter: Growing Up on the Great Lakes
by Ann M. Lewis
Wisconsin Historical Society Press • ISBN: 978-0-87020-730-3 • $14.95 Softcover
Ann Lewis’ easy-reading memoir logs days of her childhood and the timeless joys and strains for maritime families. The book is sprinkled with anecdotes about the Duluth native’s growing up and her connection to the Lake and the boats with appealing photos from that time. This is an apt book for boatnerds, history buffs and those of us who just like to read about local people. Read it on the beach where you can see the boats passing and appreciate the families waiting for their return.
